A new survey, conducted by Goodyear, finds that people in North America are not ready for winter driving. Many drivers fail to equip and prepare their vehicles for winter, or even to slow down when driving.
The survey also finds that very few drivers take basic precautionary measures ahead of the winter season in order to avoid problems when the snow does eventually fall. These include getting their engine checked or switching to winter tires.
According to the data compiled by Goodyear, more than 75% of drivers believe winter tires make a difference in challenging winter weather, Unfortunately, 58% of those living in cold-weather areas don’t use winter tires.
While 73% of respondents say they drive just as much in the winter, if not more often, than they do in other seasons, 19% claim they don’t drive any slower, even when roads are slippery. More than half of drivers (51%) say they fear other drivers more than they fear winter weather conditions.
The survey also finds that 23% of drivers wait until the first storm to put on winter tires, and 25% are unaware of the importance of putting winter tires on all four wheels.
SOME INTERESTING FACTS ON WINTER TIRES:
A QUEBEC TRANSPORT MINISTRY STUDY CONDUCTED A SERIES OF TESTS AT MINUS 20C IN 3 TO 5 CENTIMETRES OF COMPACTED SNOW AND ICE FOUND THAT AT 50 KM STOPPING DISTANCES WERE OVER 10 METRES SHORTER ON AVERAGE COMPARED TO THE SAME VEHICLE WITH ALL SEASON TIRES. PROOF THAT WINTER TIRES OUT PERFORM ALL SEASON TIRES.
IN QUEBEC WINTER TIRES ARE MANDATORY. A 2011 STUDY COMPARED ACCIDENT STATISTICS BEFORE & AFTER MANDATORY USE. IN THE PAST 2 WINTERS THERE HAS BEEN A 5% REDUCTION IN ROAD ACCIDENT INJURIES DIRECTLY ATTRIBUTED TO WINTER TIRE USE. THE RESEARCH CONCLUDES THAT THE USE OF WINTER TIRES HAS PREVENTED 575 ROAD ACCIDENT INJURIES PER WINTER IN QUEBEC. ALSO, VEHICLE ACCIDENTS RESULTING IN DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY DECLINED BY 3%.
Marc Brazeau, President, Automotive Industries Association (AIA) of Canada says "The idea that all season tires are as effective as winter tires is a dangerous misconception. The design and durability of winter tires improves performance and enhances safety in a variety of road conditions. They're the one and only choice for winter driving".
